Stricken Smitten

I had the privilege of photographing the most delicious goods the other day: various hand-dyed yarns by Seattle’s Yarn Maven, Desiree of Stricken Smitten. This yarn is just yummy. I had heard great things about it from knitter friends of mine, but when I saw the real goods, I was indeed stricken, and then smitten. This is the kind of stuff you want to pile on the floor in a big mound and roll around in.

Ahem.

(I really did NOT do this to your yarn, Desiree. I promise!)

In any case, she had asked for a few glamor shots of her goods, for potential publication, and I was only too happy to oblige. And if you are a knitter, I highly recommend picking up some of her luxury skeins at her Etsy shop, linked above. You won’t be disappointed. This is high-quality stuff, and I can only hope that I portrayed this in the following photos. She pretty much gave me artistic freedom with this shoot, so I went nuts.

Here are, as always, a few of my favorite shots from the shoot! Enjoy!

Foodportunity - March 2010

I got to shoot yet another fantastic Foodportunity event, hosted by Tom Douglas and put on by Keren Brown (aka. Frantic Foodie) at the Palace Ballroom. As always, the food was incredible, the displays were great, and there was a trend toward healthy, sustainable products, as well as a bunch of great gluten-free goods. Many chefs who weren’t a part of the event made a showing, as well as lots of new people I hadn’t seen at previous events.

I had several culinary favorites from that night but I really think the deconstructed beef stroganoff by Fresh Bistro really hit it out of the ballpark. I also loved Crispin’s hard cider. Delicious! The one thing that was missing was the food expert panel from previous events. Instead, it was just a few tables in the front where people could talk to the chefs or writers, as they passed by. There were incredible raffle prizes this time, as well as another fantastic “speed networking” event at the end.

For me, I think the highlight of the evening was meeting Steve and Paul from my new favorite web site – www.rouxbe.com (Rouxbe Cooking School, in conjunction with Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver). Everyone scored a premium membership just for being there. How generous, and what a great way to promote the site. I know it’s going to be an enormous hit!

As always, here are some highlights from the event! Enjoy!

Food Styling Workshop With Dolores Custer!

What a fantastic day! The fabulous Foodportunity crew put on another spectacular event at the Allrecipes.com headquarters in Seattle. It was the Expression Food Styling workshop with successful food stylist, Dolores Custer of Portland, Oregon.

I shot the event for the organizers, and it was wonderful to combine my two specialties: event photojournalism and food photography. Thanks to Keren Brown for asking me, and thanks to Charity Lynne Burggraaf for partnering with me with part of the day.

Huiyona Restaurant of Seattle provided a really wonderful lunch!

Here are some highlights from the workshop! All of the food shots were styled by workshop attendees. Fabulous work, people!

Lisa Yasmeen.

Here’s another session with the fabulous and talented Lisa Youk-Yasmeen. She’s not only a repeat client, but also a friend, and I just love photographing her. She’s an absolutely natural at modeling and has the most fabulous head-tilt EVER.

I love working with Lisa and am pleased to showcase some new work with her. Here are some of our favorites from the session we did last month! All photos were shot on location on or around Alki Beach in Seattle, and the Seattle Waterfront Marriott Hotel.

Good fun! Thanks for being such a fabulous model, Lisa!

Holy Hotness, Batman!

Natasha and Derek are just simply hotness personified. They photograph very well, both individually and together. We had a lovely photo session done in retro and vintage styles. Some of the shots were taken in a building on Capitol Hill, and some were taken in the lovely Sorrento Hotel in Seattle. The Sorrento staff were very accommodating. Since this shoot happened right after New Years Day, the holiday decor was still intact and we utilized the lovely lights.

I really enjoyed working with this couple. They are not only sizzling hot, but two of the nicest people I know. A special thanks to Jilladair Carlson at www.jilladaircosmetics.com for her incredible hair and make-up artistry. She truly made my job easier!

Natasha is also an actress (and a darned good one!) so I wanted to pimp her work. Check it out! www.natashasims.com

Now, on to the good stuff. Here are some highlights from our session!

Rebecca & Scott Get Engaged!

One word to describe Rebecca and Scott: silly.

I love this couple and cannot wait to photograph their wedding in April. They are absolutely adorable in every way, and I love how they interact with one another and get silly together. It’s great to have caught some of their “moments” of ridiculousness. :-)

We lucked out with sunshine on a winter afternoon! We started the shoot at the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle. While we were at the “Wave” exhibit, we got yelled at over a hidden microphone for touching one of the art pieces. I did manage to get a few shots off before we were kicked off the art. HAH!

After that, we went to the Seattle Public Library downtown, and then to the W Hotel for a few last shots. Good times! Here are some of my favorite highlights of the afternoon.

Congratulations, Rebecca & Scott! Can’t wait for April!

The Brains Behind Bastille.

Shannon Galusha is the man behind Bastille Cafe and Bar in Ballard/Seattle. And what a fantastic place it is. As we were doing headshots of him, for his image stock, I asked him how business was doing in his first six months open. “There’s an hour wait almost every day,” he said. And that’s impressive for Seattle, as you can tell that this place isn’t cheap. This is a place where you go to splurge. And the restaurant isn’t tiny, either. They have a ton of tables. Also, Seattle diners are pretty picky. They don’t revisit a place that’s expensive unless it’s got good food and good atmosphere.

Shannon is delightful and I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him, taking his pictures, and, while waiting, snapping a few shots of the interior.

Rick and I plan to go there in the not-to-distant future!

Samantha.

My beautiful friend, Samantha, cut off all of her gorgeous curly locks and therefore needed some brand-new, updated head shots. Was happy to do them and spend time with her out in the fall weather in the process. Yay for outdoor, autumn shoots!

Here are my favorites.

Fall City Farms.

We went on a recent trip (okay, 2-3 weeks ago, before the leaves turned!) to Fall City Farms. We strapped our cameras on our backs and just wandered around, enjoyed the sunlight, the foliage, and each other. It was such a great day.

This last one shows Rick taking a photo of a sign that says “January 2009 Flood Level”. Wow. Now THAT is a mighty high water level! I’m glad the farm has recovered and is just as gorgeous as always. We’ll be there again in the next week to get our pumpkins!

Fleurs d’Egypte Dance Cabaret!

One of our favorite dance cabarets “Fleurs d’Egypte” needed a photographer this month, and I was happy to oblige! I love photographing them, and admiring the costumes and beauty of these ladies. Beyond the beauty, these ladies are also smart, resourceful, and friendly. A lovely group!

Our shoot started at Seattle’s Century Ballroom which was fabulous for capturing them surrounded by that old-world charm. We then moved across the street to Cal Anderson Park, and then finally finished the shoot a couple of miles away at Volunteer Park. The ladies were fabulous and didn’t complain much as they had to stand outside in the cold while we got the best shots. I had the wonderful Eric Denson assisting me that day!

Here are some highlights from that day!
